•August 18, 2008 • Leave a Comment

This is a teaching that derives from an ancient Vedic text called Taittiriya Brahmana I.5.1 and from the commentary of Bhattabhaskara Mishra. The first paragraph relates to the textual reference.

Ashwini

Ashwini is govern by the Ashwins, the twin horsemen. It has the power to quickly reach things (shidhra vyapani shakti). Its basis above are the creatures to be healed. Its basis below is the healing therapies. From these three the entire world becomes free of disease.

Ashwini Nakshatra brings about quick aid and energization. The healing power of Ashwini is evident from these comments, particularly their ability to bring about fast, radical or miraculous cures as well as rejuvenation. The Ashwins are forces of Prana or the life-force, which is quick in its action to stimulate, help, and initiate a new level of activity.

Bharani

Bharani is ruled by Yama, the God of Death. It has the power to take things away (apabharani shakti). Its basis above is the removal of life from the body. Its basis below is the carrying of the soul to the realm of the ancestors. By the combination of these three factors creatures move on to the next world.

Bharani Nakshatra takes away that which has reached its term of life to a new condition. It shows the movement of the soul away from the body. Yama guides the soul to the astral plane, where it can experience the result of its karma from the present life and prepare for the life to come. Yama is a figure of discipline and sacrifice.

Krittika

Krittika is ruled by Agni, the God of Fire. It has the power to burn (dahana shakti). Its basis above is heat and below is light. The result of these three is burning or purification.

Krittika Nakshatra burns up negativity, purifies what is mixed, and cooks or prepares that which is not yet ripe. Agni is mainly the God of the sacred fire, so purification is perhaps the dominant action, not destruction, though purification does involve the destruction of impurity. Agni is also the fire that cooks our food and so there is a nourishing side to its effects as well. This fire has a childlike nature.

Rohini

Rohini is ruled by Prajapati, the Creator. Its power is growth (rohana shakti). Its basis above is the plants and below is the waters. The result of these three is creation.

Rohini Nakshatra allows for growth and creation on all levels, bestowing great fertility. However it also evokes some degree of jealousy because others may resent that a person gains such abundance. More over it can increase desire. But these are only side effects to its great prosperity. Prajapati is the creator who can bestow everything so we should be careful what we want.

Mrigashirsha

Mrigashirsha is ruled by Soma, the God of the Moon or the immortal nectar. Its power is giving fulfillment (prinana shakti). Its basis above is extension. Its basis below weaving (producing clothing). These three together make the world enjoyable.

Mrigashirsha Nakshatra fills or covers with joy. It is like a beautiful cloth to make our life more attractive. Soma is a great enjoyment that is won, conquered, bought or stolen, so its procurement does not always come easily. However, what does not require effort to gain is not always enjoyed either.

Ardra

Ardra is ruled by Rudra, the fierce form of Lord Shiva who represents thunder. Its power is effort (yatna shakti), particularly for making gains in life. Its basis above is hunting or searching. Its basis below is reaching the goal. These three bring about achievement.

Ardra Nakshatra arouses us to greater effort in life. This struggle can bring great rewards but not without persistence and a degree of luck. Rudra is the hunter and the wielder of the bow. The idea here also suggests placing the arrow and hitting the target. For this one must have a good aim, as well as strength to shoot. Rudra is also the lord of wild animals.

Punarvasu

Punarvasu is ruled by Aditi, the Great Mother Goddess. Its power is the ability to gain wealth or substance (vasutva prapana shakti). Its basis above is the wind or air. Its basis below is wetness or rain. These three bring about the revitalization of the plants.

Punarvasu Nakshatra brings about the return of energy and vitality, like the return of the monsoon rains after the dry season. It causes our creative growths and inspirations to be renewed. Aditi is the Earth Goddess who grants all abundance and gives birth to all the Gods.

Pushya

Pushya is ruled by Brihaspati, the God of Divine wisdom. Its power is the ability to create spiritual energy (brahmavarchasa shakti). Its basis above is sacrificial worship. Its basis below is the worshipper. These three result in the creation of spiritual energy.

Pushya Nakshatra increases our good karma and good efforts. The value of this Nakshatra for religious and spiritual practices is emphasized. Brihaspati is the lord of speech, particularly prayer, and of all forms of worship, including meditation, so these indications are all in harmony with his functions.

Aslesha

Aslesha is ruled by the serpent God. It has the power to inflict with poison (visasleshana shakti). Its basis above is the approach of the serpent. Its basis below is trembling and agitation. These three together bring about destruction of the victim.

Aslesha Nakshatra paralyzes the enemy. This can be helpful if we have enemies but it can serve to give a person an inimical temperament as well. It all depends upon how the energy of this Nakshatra is used. Serpents also give wisdom, but a practical wisdom through which one can overcome enemies and obstacles.

Magha

Magha is ruled by the Ancestors. It gives the power of to leave the body (tyage kshepani shakti). Its basis above is mourning. Its basis below is leaving the body. These three together bring about death.

Magha Nakshatra causes a change of state or condition, a kind of death. Usually it shows that we are coming to the end of a cycle. Its condition is prior to that of Bharani which indicates the movement of the soul away from the body. Of course there are higher meanings of this Nakshatra relative to Ancestors including ancestral pride and power.

Purva Phalguni

Purva Phalguni in the Vedic order is ruled by Aryaman, the God of contracts and unions. It gives the power of procreation (prajanana shakti). Its basis above is the wife or female partner. Its basis below is the male or masculine partner. These three together bring about the creation of the fetus.

Purva Phalguni brings about union and procreation on all levels. Yet this follows some official agreement or marriage and is part of the creation of a new family or social order. Aryaman governs such productive alliances and also arranges the marriage festival.

Uttara Phalguni

Uttara Phalguni in the Vedic order is ruled by Bhaga, the God of happiness. Its power the giving of accumulation or prosperity (chayani shakti) through marriage or union. Uttara Phalguni brings the prosperity that results through union. It indicates both the need for union and for organizing the resources gained through it. Bhaga is also a God of wealth who brings about the right apportionment of resources. While the previous Nakshatra shows marriage this shows the setting up of the household for the newly married couple.

Hasta

Hasta is ruled by Savitar, the creative form of the Sun God. Its power is the ability to gain what we are seeking and place it in our own hands (hasta sthapaniya agama shakti). Its basis above is the seeking of gain. Its basis below is the process of gaining. These three together place what one wishes to gain in one s own hand.

Hasta gives the ability to achieve our goals in a complete and immediate manner. Such goals are usually creative in nature. Savitar is the creative will that builds up the universe with all of its beauty. His productions are most wonderful.

Chitra

Chitra is ruled by Twashtar, the Cosmic craftsman. Its power is ability to accumulate merit in life (punya cayani shakti). Its basis above is the law. Its basis below is the truth. Through these three the worker is able to gain honor in his work.

Swati

Swati is ruled by Vayu, the God of the Wind. It gives the power to scatter like the wind (pradhvamsa shakti). Its basis above is moving in various directions. Its basis below is change of form. The result of these three is transformation.

Vishakha

Vishakha is ruled by Indra and Agni, who represent the powers of heat and lightning in the Atmosphere. It gives the power to achieve many and various fruits in life (vyapana shakti). Its basis above is plowing or cultivation. Its basis below is the harvest. These three gives us the fruit of the harvest.

Vishakha provides the effort to achieve our goals abundantly through time, like a farmer plowing his field. It does not give immediate results but perhaps greater long term gains. Indra and Agni here are agriculture Gods showing the ripening effect of heat, rain and seasonal changes.

Anuradha

Anuradha is ruled by Mitra, the Divine Friend. It gives the power of worship (radhana shakti). Its basis above is ascension. Its basis below is descent. From these three honor and abundance is gained.

Jyeshta

Jyeshta is ruled by Indra, the ruler of the Gods. It has the power to rise or conquer, and gain courage in battle (arohana shakti). Its basis above is attack and its basis below is defense. The result of these three is that one becomes a hero.

Jyeshta allows us to reach the summit of our personal powers but it requires great courage and effort. It shows karmic battles that require our complete energization in order to overcome. Indra is the king of the Gods who, alone and single handed, must eventually defeat the dragon, the most fearful of serpents. Though his position looks hopeless, he wins by courage and cunning, not by strength of arms.

Mula

Mula is ruled by Nirriti, the Goddess of destruction. It has the power to ruin or destroy. Its basis above is breaking things apart (barhana shakti). Its basis below is crushing things. Through these three one gains the power to destroy destruction.

In bringing afflictions, Mula Nakshatra allows us to destroy their root, as long as they don’t overcome us. It shows the destruction necessary to proceed a new creation. Nirriti is Alakshmi or the denial of Lakshmi (abundance and prosperity). She is Kali or the negative effect of time that we must protect ourselves from or use to our advantage.

Purvashadha

Purvashadha is ruled by the Waters (Apas). Its power is that of invigoration (varchograhana shakti). Its basis above is strength. Its basis below is connection. Through these three one gains luster.

Purvashadha brings about purification and regeneration, like the energy gained through taking a bath in water. It provides us additional energy for our efforts. These effects flow from the Waters, which in this instance are heavenly in nature and can provide inner purification.

Uttarashadha

Uttarashadha is ruled by the Universal Gods (Vishwe Deva). Its power is grant an unchallengeable victory (apradhrisya shakti). Its basis above is the strength to win. Its basis below is the goal that one can win. From these three one becomes the unchallenged winner.

Uttarashadha brings us to the summit of our power, support and recognition, not so much through our personal efforts (which is more the case in Jyeshta) but with the appropriate alliances and support of all the Gods. Our victory depends upon a righteous cause that is beneficial to all, which we are helping in. Here we fight more as the leader of an army.

Shravana

Shravana is ruled by Vishnu, the pervader. Its power is that of connection (samhanana shakti). Its basis above is seeking. Its basis below are the paths. The result of these three is the connection of all things together.

Shravana enables us to link people together by connecting them to their appropriate paths in life. This requires receptivity and listening, and results in understanding and aspiration. Vishnu with his three strides links together the three worlds of Earth, Atmosphere and Heaven, connecting all creatures with the Gods.

Dhanishta

Dhanishta is ruled by the Vasus, the Gods of abundance. Its power is to give abundance and fame (khyapayitri shakti). Its basis above is birth. Its basis below is prosperity. These three give the power to bring people together.

Dhanishta allows us to bring the resources of people together. In this way it builds upon the connections of Shravana and makes them more practical. The Vasus are the deities of the Earth that give abundance on the earthly plane. They are manifestations of Agni or the sacred fire and show the gifts that it can dispense.

Shatabhishak

Shatabhishak is ruled by Varuna, the God of the cosmic waters. It has the power of healing (bheshaja shakti). Its basis above is extension or pervasion over all. Its basis below is the support of all. These three make the world free of calamity.

Shatabhishak counters difficult karmas through Divine grace and repentance. These include not only diseases but difficulties of all kind, including sin. While Ashwini gives more immediate cures, Shatabhishak brings about a healing crisis leading to revitalization. Varuna is a God of sin, debts, injury and disease, who cannot only bring these calamities upon us but can remove them from us, if we propitiate him sincerely.

Purva Bhadra

Purva Bhadra is ruled by Aja Ekapad, the one-footed serpent. It gives the fire to raise a spiritual person up in life (yajamana udyamana shakti). What is good for all people is its basis above. What is good for the Gods is its basis below. These three cause the entire world to be supported.

Purva Bhadra grants a universal view through internal purification. This raises up our spiritual aspiration in life and takes us out of the domain of selfish behavior. Aja Ekapad is the cosmic or celestial form of Agni or the sacred fire. It raises up our spiritual aspiration in life.

Uttara Bhadra

Uttara Bhadra is ruled by Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the depths of the Atmosphere. Its power is the bringing of the rain (varshodyamana shakti). Its basis above is the raining clouds. Its basis below growing of the plants. From these three factors the three worlds gain their stability.

Uttara Bhadra grants growth and prosperity in a broad way, benefiting the entire world. This makes it very auspicious. Ahir Budhnya is the benefic serpent who brings the rain, connecting us with the creative powers at the foundations of the world.

The 27 nakshatras

•August 18, 2008 • Leave a Comment

The nakshatras are one of the oldest references we have to astrology from the Rig Veda, dating back about 5,000 years ago. The Vedas are the religious scriptures of the great seers and sages of India. The nakshatras are like the zodiacal signs but more specific. Their meanings are derived from the constellations, fixed stars and the mythology behind these portions in the sky. They are rich in meaning and have ruling deities that reveal the stories or myths that bring to life the symbology referred to in our own lives.

The nakshatras are divisions of 13 degrees 20 minutes starting from zero Aries and ending at 30 degrees of Pisces, 13.20 divided into the 12 signs is 27. The nakshatras are referred to as the lunar mansions because the Moon moves approximately 13.20 per day, therefore, resides in one nakshatra per day. The personal planet in which the nakshatra resides will reveal deep information about the individual in relation to the meanings of the houses (area of life), and what houses the planet rules.

For example, the planet that rules the 7th house (indicating a person’s spouse), will reveal detailed information about the spouse by the description of that nakshatra. If Aries is the sign of the 7th house, then Mars, the ruler of Aries (the nakshatra where Mars resides) will describe the spouse. If Mars is in the nakshatra Magha, the spouse would have all the kingly qualities of Magha.

Ashwini  “the horse woman” 0.00 to 13.20 Aries

Symbol            horse’s head

Deity   Ashwini Kumaras the horse headed twins who, as physicians to the gods, perform medical miracles

Stars    El Sharatan, the horn of the Ram. Its qualities are violent, outspoken, and brazen

Mythology      Sanjna is the name of the goddess who disguised herself as a horse and fled from her husband because he betrayed her. He caught up with her, and their offspring produced the Ashwini Kumaras, the horse-headed twins. Each day the twins bring the dawn as their chariot speeds through the sky

Indications      The “star of transport,” they are pioneers, explorers, always ready to try something new. They have zeal, and a zest for life. Heroic and very courageous, some will want to join the armed forces. Their restless and impatient nature has them rushing off quickly without planning ahead. Speed, not efficiency, is their preference. Their speech may be quick and halting, possibly stuttering, for the words can’t match the speed of their thoughts. They are the true trailblazers, headstrong and stubborn. As the symbol for new beginnings, they can represent a baby who goes after what it wants, not considering the inconveniences to others. They can be childish, irresponsible and inconsiderate. Ashwini rules all forms of transportation and fast travel. They are probably known for getting speeding tickets. Healers performing miracle healings are one of Ashwini’s gifts.

Indications      Considered the “star of restraint,” this is a difficult nakshatra. It denotes struggles and obstacles that result in personal breakthroughs. It is symbolic of the birthing process where one has grown out of the present conditions and must go through the pain of a new birth to create a new life. It is about personal transformation. Since Yama was the first to come to earth, and the first to die, they may be the first to try or do things. Social reformers, activists and philosophers are prominent here. There is a tendency towards jealousy or being plagued by the jealousy of others. Because the womb is so confining, in the end there is a feeling of restriction or confinement for these individuals. They feel oppressed by others, large groups and restrictive laws imposed by the government. It can also refer to those who inflict oppression on others. Here is the mystery of life and death. 2. The 1st 07, Nitya 10, Sana 07, Deya 18, Taya 16, Dhanya 19, Sata 17, Sana 07 and Nara 20 are respectively the years of Maha Dasha of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus in the Vimshottari Dasha System.

3-6. To find out the Antar Dasha of a planet in the Dasha of any planet, multiply the Dasha Years of that planet with 3 and the product thus obtained be again multiplied with the Dasha Years of the Ishta (desired) planet and this product be divided by 30. The figure so available in months etc. will represent the Antar Dasha. Also multiply the Antar Dasha time of a particular planet with the Dasha Years whose Pratyantar Dasha is to be found and divide the product by 120. The resultant will be the Pratyantar time. The same way the Sookshmantar and Prana Dasha Antar have to be computed.

7. The learned after computing the Dashas have arrived at their good or bad effects in the lives of the natives, similarly, longevity can also be predicted.

8. Sages say that the Antar of the Lord of the 9th in the Dasha of the Lord of the 5th is most auspicious.

9. The Dasha of the Lord of the 9th associated with that of the 5th grants progeny and rajya (authority);

The Dasha of the Lord of the 4th conjoined with that of the 10th is auspicious (grants progeny and authority).

10. The Dasha of the planet associated with the Lord of the 5th or 9th is also auspicious.

11. The Dasha of the planet conjoined with a malefic is bad;

If the Dasha lord is conjoined with a benefic, it is good and promotes wealth.

12. The Sages say that the Dasha of the Lord of the Ascendant (Asc.) associated with that of the 5th or 9th gives rajya (power to rule).

13-14. The Dasha of the Lords of the 5th and the 9th or those of the 10th and the 5th when they conjoin or that of the 4th and the 9th when they conjoin confers power and prosperity.

15. The Dasha of the Lord of the 10th occupying the 9th house confers fame, prosperity and happiness; the result is the same in the Dasha of this Lord of the 10th associated with that of the 4th.

16. The Dashas of the Lords of the 6th and that of the 7th become auspicious if they occupy the 10th house or associate with the Lord.

17. If the same planet owns the 2nd and the 7th houses (Marakas) and occupies the 4th house or is associated with its Lord then the Dasha of that planet will also be auspicious.

18. In the Dasha of the Lord of the Ascendant or that of the 6th and the Antar of the Markesh (Lords of the 2nd-7th) there is danger from arms and chances of great suffering.

19. If the Lord of the 4th is in the 10th and that of the 10th is in the 4th then their Dashas are said to be auspicious by the learned.

20. Lords of the 4th, 10th, 5th and 9th wherever are together in anyone house, and the planet associating with them, his Dasha is also said to be auspicious.

21. If the Lords of the 5th and the 10th occupy the 4th, their Dashas are said to be auspicious conferring power and authority.

22. The Learned say that the Dashas of the planets which are associated with or aspected by the Lords of the 5th and the 10th confer power and authority.

23. The Dashas of the Lord of the 5th occupying the 10th or that of the 10th in his own house (10th) confer wealth and power.

This brings to an end of the Dasha Phala Adhyaya.

This brings to the end of the Antar Dasha Phala Adhyaya.

Chapter 7

Karaka Dasha Phala Adhyaya

1. Now I will describe the effects of the planets depending upon their nature and qualities for the information of students.

2. By caste Jupiter-Venus are Brahmins: the Sun-Mars are Kshatrias, Moon-Mercury are merchants; Saturn, a Sudra and Rahu-Ketu are Neecha (low) caste.

3. All the 12 signs beginning with Pisces in order are Brahamin, Kshatria, Merchant and Sudra. The sages have considered their Yogas and Aspects also while predicting.

4. The significators of the Bhavas in order are: The Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn.

5. The Sun is the significator of father; the Moon of mother; Mercury-Saturn-Venus of brother; Mars of the Sun; the Sun of the friend; and Rahu-Saturn of enemies.

6-7. Saturn-Mars govern Father; Jupiter-Mercury-Venus govern Mother; the Sun and Moon; the King; Mars, the leader; Mercury, the Prince; Jupiter-Venus, the Minister; Saturn, the Servant. Effects should also be drawn accordingly.

8. Even Saturn in Aries is the governor of father, and all the planets show their special effects during their Antar Dasha.

9. The Lord of a house in his Dasha becomes the dispositor of the effects (gains or wealth) represented by the Lord of the Shadvarga occupied by him (the Lord of the house). These effects (gains or wealth) of the respective planets could be realized in their Dashas only.

10-13. If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of the Sun, the native gets fortune and prosperity through the king or his paternal side;

If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of Moon, the native gets fortune and prosperity from the maternal side;

If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of Mars, the native gets fortune and prosperity from the son or leaders;

If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of Mercury, the native gets fortune and prosperity from the fraternal side or princes;

If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of Jupiter, the native gets fortune and prosperity from the Jupiter or Ministers;

If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of Venus, the native gets fortune and prosperity from the mother or women or wife;

If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of Saturn, the native gets fortune and prosperity from the Shudras or attendants;

If the Lord of the Dasha is posited in the Amsha (Hora- Navamsha etc.) of Rahu or Ketu, the native gets fortune and prosperity from Shudras.

14. During the Dasha of Saturn-Mars the effects are through the father.

During the Dasha of Jupiter-Mercury-Venus, the effects are through mother and brothers.

15. During the Dasha of Jupiter the effects are due to Brahamatava or through the Brahmins.

In the same way the effects of the Dashas of the planets may be read according to their respective qualities (Sangya).

This bring to the end of the Karaka Dasa Phala Adhyaya.

Chapter 8

Vimshottari Dasa Phala Adhyaya

1. We will include the Astrological results (good or bad) of the Nakshatra Dasha Paddhati as shown in Vimshottari System; and do not believe in Ashtottari System (This shloka is a repeat of the Shloka 3 in chapter 1 of of Laghu Parashari).

2. Starting with Krittika the Nakshatras from Krittika to the Janama Nakshatra (natal constellation) are divided by nine and the remainder will stand for the Lord of the commencing Dasha. The remaining periods will be of the planets in the order given below: The Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus.

3-5. The periods of the Dashas of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus are 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19, 17, 7 and 20 respectively. Thus the life span has been taken as 120 years in Vimshottari.

6-8. For the natives of the Aries Asc. (Ascendant) Saturn, Mercury-Venus are inauspicious; Jupiter and the Sun are auspicious. But when there is relationship between Jupiter and Saturn the former (Jupiter) is bereft of his goodness (qualities). This is transferred by evil association only. Venus by owning the Marakasthana should be a Markesh; but this alone does not imbibe this quality in him. Malefics become Marakas by their association with Saturn etc. Moon and Mars are neutrals. Such are the good-bad Yogas for the Aries Ascendant-native.

9-10. For the natives of Taurus Ascendant (Asc.) Jupiter-Venus-Moon are evil; Saturn, Mercury are good; Saturn alone is a Raj Yoga Karaka, Mars-Jupiter-Venus and Moon are Marakas and the Sun is neutral. So should the learned read the effects of Taurus born natives.

11-12. For the natives of Gemini Asc. (Ascendant) Mars-Jupiter and the Sun are evil. Venus alone is auspicious. As Saturn conjoined with Jupiter is considered evil for Aries born, so is their association for the Gemini born. Moon being a Markesh is not a killer. She gives ‘Nishphala’ effects (fruitless) only. So should the wise consider the effects of the Gemini born.

13-14. For the natives of Cancer Asc. (Ascendant) Venus-Mercury are evil; Mars-Jupiter are good. Mars only is especially a Yoga Karaka. Saturn is a Maraka and other malefics are also Marakas.

15-16. For the natives of Leo Asc. (Ascendant) Mercury-Venus are evil; Mars-Jupiter are good. Relationship between Jupiter-Venus does not become Yogakaraka. Mercury and other malefics are Marakas.

17-18. For the natives of Virgo Asc. (Ascendant) Mars-Jupiter-Moon are evil. Venus only is auspicious. Venus + Mercury are Yoga Karaka. Though Venus is Markesh, she owns the 9th also: therefore, is not a Maraka. Mars etc. other planets are Marakas. So should the learned read the Virgo Asc. Chart.

19-20. For the natives of Libra Asc. (Ascendant) Jupiter, Sun-Mars are evil; Saturn-Mercury are good; Moon-Mercury are Raja Yoga Karaka; Mars, a Maraka; Jupiter-Sun-Mars are also Marakas and Venus is neutral – so should the learned know of the planets of Libra Asc. Charts.

21-22. For the natives of Scorpio Asc. (Ascendant) Mercury-Mars-Venus are evil; Jupiter-Moon are good; the Sun-Moon are Raja Yoga Karaka. Jupiter even by owning the 2nd (Maraka) is not Markesh. Mercury etc. other evil planets are Marakas. So should the learned know the effects of planets of Scorpio Asc. born.

23-24. For the natives of Sagittarius Asc. (Ascendant) Venus is the only evil planet; Mars – the Sun are good; the Sun – Mercury are Yogakaraka; Saturn is the Chief Markesh; but does not kill. In the same way Venus etc. evil planets in their Dashas and Antar prove to be fatal and show all the killing qualities.

25-26. For the natives of Capricorn Asc. (Ascendant) Mars, Jupiter and Moon are evil; Venus and Mercury are good; Saturn being a Markesh is not a killer; Mars etc. other malefics, when they have Maraka characteristics become such. Only Venus is a Yoga Karaka.

27-28. For the natives of Aquarius Asc. Jupiter, Moon and Mars are evil; only Venus is good and Yoga Karaka. When Jupiter, Moon and Mars show Maraka characteristics they become Markesh.

29-30. For the natives of Pisces Asc. Saturn, Venus, the Sun and Mercury are evil. Mars and Moon are good. Mars + Jupiter are Yoga Karaka. in spite of the Maraka characteristics Mars does not become a Markesh. Saturn and Mercury are Marakas. So should the learned accept the effects on Pisces born natives.

31-32. The learned should decide about the Maraka planets according to these principles. Except the Sun and Moon all the other planets are Marakas if they own the Maraka houses. The Markesh does not prove to be fatal in his Dasha or Antar. He kills in the Antar of an evil planet in his own Maha Dasha. Judgement of Houses – 9 Indications of houses from 1st to 12th.

This brings to the end of Vimshottari Dasha Phala Adhyaya.

Chapter 9

1. Indications of the first house are: Physique, Complexion, Longevity, Fame, Status, Appearance and Wealth should be assessed from the Rising Sign, the Ascendant.

10. Aquarius, Cancer, Taurus, Pisces, Scorpio and Libra and watery signs and the rest are dry.

11. Sun, Mars and Saturn are fiery; Moon-Venus are watery; Mercury-Jupiter are watery if in watery sign and fiery if in any other sign.

We meditate on the Supreme Sun whose light pervades this world(Bhuh),

the heavens(Bhuvah) and the next world(suvah). May thy light guide our

intellect in the right direction.

The Gayatri mantra is one of the oldest of the divine hymns. Gayatri

mantra is the essenceof all seventy million supreme mantras. Just as all the

rivers merge in the oceans, all mantras unite in the Gayatri mantra. The

arrangement of the twenty-four seed syllables in the Gayatri mantra is the

most wondrous and mysterious. The chanting of this mantra develops nada,

a regular subtle vibration in the nerves of the subtle body. The repetition of

this mantra with right understanding of its sacred meaning has the power to

dispel all the negative tendencies in the human mind and thereby unfold the

Supreme Self within. The Gayatri mantra is chanted early in the morning

after bath.
